Answering common interview questions

Most interviews include the same few questions. Prepare short, honest answers with real examples.

Interviewers in Canada often ask similar questions, whatever the role. Preparing for them in advance helps you stay calm and give clear answers.

"Tell me about yourself"

Keep it to about one minute. Say what you do now, your most relevant experience and why this role interests you. This is not your life story.

"Tell me about a time when…"

These questions ask for a real example. A simple structure works well:

  • Situation: where you were and what was happening
  • Task: what you needed to do
  • Action: what you did
  • Result: what happened, with a number if possible

"Why do you want this job?"

Connect your answer to the role: the type of work, the team or the chance to use your skills. Show that you understand what the job involves.

"Are you available for shifts, weekends or overtime?"

Answer honestly. It is better to be clear now than to accept a schedule you cannot keep.

"Do you have any questions for us?"

Always say yes. Ask about training, the team, a typical day or the next step in the process.
