Canadian workplace culture: what new team members notice first

Punctuality, direct but polite communication, and safety rules come up again and again.

Every workplace is different, but people joining Canadian workplaces often notice the same things in their first weeks.

Being on time matters

Arriving a few minutes early for a shift is expected. If you are going to be late or absent, tell your supervisor as early as possible.

Polite and direct communication

Canadians tend to be polite and use "please" and "thank you" often. Questions are welcome. It is better to ask than to guess.

Safety comes first

Safety training, protective equipment and reporting hazards are taken seriously. Follow procedures even when it feels slower.

English and French

Canada has two official languages. In many workplaces English is used day to day; in Quebec and some other communities, French is common. Bilingual staff are valued in customer-facing roles.

Teamwork and respect

Workplaces expect respectful behaviour toward everyone, regardless of background or position.
