How to write a Canadian-style CV

Canadian employers expect a short, clear CV. Here is the format that works.

Canadian employers read CVs quickly. A clear, short document that shows your relevant experience gives you the best chance.

Keep it to two pages

One page is fine for early careers. Two pages is the usual maximum.

What to include

  • Name, phone, email and city or country
  • A two- or three-line summary of your experience
  • Work experience, most recent first, with dates and three to five duties or achievements per job
  • Education, training and certificates
  • Languages and your level in each

What to leave out

In Canada, CVs usually do not include a photo, date of birth, marital status or personal identification numbers.

Make it specific

"Prepared meals for 200 guests per night" is stronger than "responsible for cooking". Use numbers where you can.

Save it as PDF

Name the file with your name, for example Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf.
